Great information on
Tony
Williams. I have just read
Dalton
Narine’s piece on Ivory & Steel. There is no dispute that Tony Williams is
legendary. He is an inventor, innovator,
composer and leader. Unfortunately the
business of pan failed him. RCA
undercut him in the recording of
Ivory &
Steel, a truly signature
recording of the pan and so too did the
members of the band who followed the
impresario to England. One would hope today
that steelband organizations have better
organization structures so the archivists
and business managers are separate from the
composers, pannists, tuners, etc.
Richard Etienne and I worked together at
ISCOTT (Iron & Steel Co.) between 1979 –
1980. I never knew he played. However, he
developed into a brilliant financial
strategist and concert promoter. No doubt
Ricky understood the art form and is the
type of person whose skills would protect
our artistes.
RE: Sam Saldenha - 24. June 2008
I read the Dalton Narine article and it is correct. The only part I have a problem with, is that he is
somehow giving credit to Anthony Williams as the one
who created Harmonic tuning, when Tony himself told
me that it was Bertie Marshall. However, the tone
of Tony’s pans had a high resonance like
harmonically tuned pans.
The rights to the Ivory and Steel Recording were
sold to a recording company in Trinidad headed by a
guy name Samaroo. About four or five years ago
Tony asked me to type a letter to Samaroo (I
believe his first name is Lucky) to reprint the
record in CD format, but he never got a reply, and
it would be illegal for him (Tony) to do it on his
own. The members of the band did not abandon Tony
and followed Winnifred Atwell to England, this was a
later tour organized by Sony Black (a Trinidad
impresario domiciled in England), who bought tickets
for only half of the band, who eventually stranded
in England and had to perform to survive. |

Thanks for posting our first year Steel Drum
Band on your site. It was the kids' first
performance and they will be so proud to
know that people other than their Moms and
Dads enjoyed the show. These kids meet
before school to practice and love learning
the instrument. They have a great teacher
that is an awesome drummer and quite an
inspiration. There are more kids in the
band than drums at the school, so they take
turns and rotate after each song. Love your
site! Keep up the good work.

Let me tell you a little story that you
will love - one day i was in the ladies
bathroom here at work, and a girl
stopped me and said "HEY!! Let me see
that T-SHIRT you are wearing.... does it
REALLY say 'panjumbie' -- ???? How yuh
wearin a panjumbie t-shirt? Who are
you?? And how yuh know about PAN???
Turns out she is a Trini gal who moved
here only recently for work, and saw me
wearin YOUR t-shirt, so she spoke to me.
just few minutes ago she came to my
desk to ask me where is our panyard, and
who is our band? and where can she find
a good tuner..........!
So you see your t-shirt is WORKING in
the big world to increase peace and pan
from all corners!
-- isn't that
WONDERFUL?????

Hi, my name is Marvin based in South Africa,
Gauteng Province city of Johannesburg. I’m
one of the biggest fans of steel pan. I’m
also one of the people who had the privilege
to go see Andy Narell performing live a
couple of times & will definitely go see him
again on the 30th of this month @
the Dome.
I for one would love to play steel pan, but
this instrument is very scares this side.
Most of them are designed for schools & I
think it’s time this instrument should be
exposed to the public as well. Even though a
lot of jazz musicians don’t take steelband
music seriously, there should be opportunities
for pan lovers as well to “Passage” an input
in the world of jazz.
It would really be advisable & appreciated
to create more lessons & workshops for
people who would really love to play
steelpan & share their love for the
instrument with others.

stimmung her besonders gut gelungen. das solendo,
das programm und nicht zuletzt der einsatz der
vielen pan-kultur mitglieder haben das
ermöglicht.
also - auf ein neues
